Dreamy Day Trip: Buffalo Gap/Tuscola
Tuscola and Buffalo Gap are two small neighboring towns located about 30 minutes northwest of Oplin House (and about a half hour south of Abilene).
History buffs, antique lovers and families love this destination, but perhaps the area’s most popular attraction is the world famous Perini Ranch Steakhouse. Here’s how we’d spend a day in the area:
742 Garza Ave, Tuscola
Definitely the best coffee you’ll find in at least a 30-mile radius, but the seriously special thing about The Branch is their homemade bread. Their rolls are the base for a killer breakfast sandwich and their loaves are cut for incredible toasts topped with avocado or peanut butter and banana. You can’t go wrong with the muffins, cinnamon rolls or croissants either.
Liberty Trade Days at The Homeplace
2034 CR 131, Tuscola
Treasure hunters flock to this indoor/outdoor marketplace the first Saturday of each month to see what they might uncover. Come with an empty trunk to peruse furniture, antiques, vintage goods, household items, collectibles and even local farmer’s market-type goods.

If you find yourself in Buffalo Gap at breakfast or lunch time, a stop at The Gap Cafe is essential. If you’re in a hurry, grab a pastry from the case. But if you have a moment to linger, try the biscuits and gravy for breakfast or the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich for lunch.
133 William St, Buffalo Gap
The oldest public building in Taylor County, a preserved courthouse, is the centerpiece of this walkable village. Visitors can also peruse a schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, historic home, gas station and more in a village set up to look like a frontier town from the 1880s to 1920s.
100 Vine St, Buffalo Gap
Similar to the Trade Days in Tuscola, this outdoor market takes place every third Saturday and is a treasure trove just waiting to be explored. Find an unexpected gift or souvenir and enjoy plenty of people-watching at this monthly marketplace.
1042 Litel St, Buffalo Gap
Gourmet food gifts, one-of-a-kind gifts, barware and seasonal goods make this stop well worth the drive. Grab your souvenirs and road trip snacks here!
